9:45  From charts to insight and action
Creating business value with a problem-solving perspective

Dietmar Meyersiek, EXES GmbH

Too often, instruments of communication in reporting, controlling and planning focus on descriptive activities. Causal analyses, expanding the solution space, exploring creative solutions and predicting/visualizing consequences of actions are insufficiently employed. New information sources (“Big Data”) and advanced analytics offer opportunities for creating and communicating business value with a problem-solving perspective. The speech provides a powerful framework using business examples.

Title standards

Arne-Kristian Schulz, blueforte GmbH

Arne will make some suggestions and collect the ideas from the participants about the following topics:

+How do we notate time periods, scenarios, and variances etc.?

+How does this effect the “third row” of our present title standard?

+Is there a need to standardize other title elements such as rankings, averages, etc.?

Download a draft of Arne's presentation in preparation for the discussion.

Scenarios and semantic axes

Jürgen Faisst, HICHERT+FAISST GmbH

Jürgen will discuss concrete changes in the definition and visualization of scenarios:

+Semantic notation for character of scenarios (actual, planned)?

+Semantic axes for variance charts only? (How to handle stacked columns and bars?)

+No more labelling of scenarios on x-axes?

Download a draft of Jürgen's presentation in preparation for the discussion.

Stock and flow measures

Rolf will discuss concrete suggestions for the visualization of stock and flow measures:

+Area and line charts for stock values and YTD values?

+How to identify stock and flow values in horizontal and vertical axes?

+Is there a conflict with the planned “value-volume” and “good-bad-neutral” notation?

Download a draft of Rolf's presentation in preparation for the discussion.

Dashboard topics

Raphael Branger, IT-Logix AG

Raphael will discuss some suggestions and collect the ideas from the participants about the following topics:

+Should the IBCS Standards also cover interactive elements?

+How do they interact with titles?

+How to handle scaling in interactive systems? Consistent per application or per page?
